How Does 3D Scanning Impact Implant Treatment?

Aug 2 • 2 minute read

Planning for the placement of dental implants is vital to supporting lasting results and patient comfort. At City Place Dental, we ensure the utmost precision and accuracy during this procedure by obtaining the best view of the treatment area.

If you’re curious about the latest developments in dental technology and how they positively affect your implant procedure, we have created this guide to improve patient education.

The Benefits and Basics of 3D Technology

3D scanning has revolutionized the process of taking dental x-rays. This scanner takes a multi-dimensional image of your mouth, which is used to pinpoint a diagnosis and develop a customized treatment plan. The scanner provides a superior view, compared to a film radiograph, for efficient and in-depth treatment processes. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) used in this equipment zeroes in on an exact area with a high degree of accuracy and provides the 3D view.

Detailed images provide the ability to detect conditions that may not be apparent on other images. While 3D scanning is helpful for planning treatment of restorations and orthodontic work, it has proven highly valuable in treatment planning for implant procedures.

With 3D technology, the x-ray beam is smaller, allowing for a shorter scan time and reduced radiation exposure. The scan itself takes roughly 10 seconds, eliminating the lengthy wait for developing film X-rays. Another benefit to this method is that there are no uncomfortable film wings to bite down on; the CBCT machine easily scans the whole head while you sit comfortably.

3D Scanning for Implant Surgery

City Place Dental has 3D imaging capabilities in the office, which expedites pre-procedural planning and actual implant placement. While 2D imaging is only used to speculate if the jawbone is dense enough, or how deep the implant should be placed, 3D imaging helps clearly identify if there is enough bone density in the jaw to support the implant. 3D guided surgery can also determine where nerves run through the area to avoid an uncomfortable error in placement.
